For those of you who have watched Sex and the City and ever wondered as to the source of the creation of such beautiful bags; wonder no more as the designer responsible was none other than Patricia Field. She is the stylist for Sex and the City, the Devil wears Prada, Ugly Betty and erm Barbie? Yes that is right, in 2007, the sought after designer took on the task of making Barbie inspired handbags but fortunately for the lovers of all things Field and Barbie alike, she chose to make them in sizes that were proportionally relevant to a human body. When I was naught but a youth, like every other female child, I wanted a Barbie to play with and call my own. I received nothing of the sort and eventually dismissed the doll as childish. At the time, I was not aware that this miniature version of a perfect human would eventually become an iconic figure but currently, I stand corrected as here we have Ms Field herself designing a range inspired by no other. When designing for the characters of Sex and the City, Patricia expresses the joy she felt from overcoming the challenge presented by designing for four women with unique styles but maintaining a certain level of cohesion for their characters as friends. Certainly that must have been an interesting task, however I commend her for what must have been an interesting period designing bags for an inanimate doll. I am not altogether certain of the practicality of these bags, especially the clutches which come illustrated with Barbie dolls and things of the sort but I am sure that those who have spent the better half of their childhood styling various Barbie Dolls will have some sort of clue as to how to work in these colourful creations into an outfit. I have nothing against Barbie but I think my allegiances lie with the SATC crew.
